There is always a tomorrow.

The only try was made by winger Fujiwara. I took two pics of this try scoring scene. One is fine, but the other came out outfocused and blurred. I gave it a sort of artistic retouch to cover up the mistake...

The goal was distant

while it looked close.........

I wrote how vital this game was in the previous article. It was Mitsubishi that knew it. KSWs were demolished by 5-44.

KSWs take on the old foe

KSWs will take on Mitsubishi Heavy Industry, Sagamihara on Oct. 10 at Kitakami Athletic Park. Mitsubishi is our old foe. Let me tell you why.

Kamaishi (as Nippon Steel Kamaishi) used to belong to East Japan Company-owned Club League, one of the former bodies of the current Japan Rugby Top League. In those days, Kamaishi was struggling and kept the bottom in the league, which forced them play promotion-relegation match seven straight years.

In 2000, Nippon Steel unveiled a plan to open its rugby club to local players, not limited to its employees. But, this caused a problem. At that time, only company-owned clubs were admitted in the league. Supporters collected a number of signatures to petition Kanto R.F.U. to revise the regulations, and finally they gave a nod. All we had to do was to win promotion-relegation games.

Mitsubishi was the last opponent of promotion-relegation matches in the 2000/2001 season. It was a very close game. In the dying stage, winger Kazunori Kon’s try made the score 33-34, however, Number Eight Jon Stafford’s unsuccessful conversion put Kamaishi into the lower league. “Kamaishi’s days are over”, yelled Mitsubishi’s supporters and all of us were in despair. We had to celebrate Kamaishi’s new beginning with sadness.

Mitsubishi took the wooden spoon in the 2001/2002 E.J.C.C.L. and returned to the lower league in 2002. There was no encounter of the two in the 2002/2003 season, because the format of the league was slightly different from the current East 10.

In 2003/2004 season, the time came. We had tough battles against Mitsubishi. In the East 10, Kamaishi, as the Seawaves, made revenge by 30-29. The Gold and Blues also edged out Mistubishi in the play-off by 31-27, which advanced KSWs to the Japan Rugby Championship Tournament.

Both of KSWs and Mitsubishi are still in the East 10, and looking for promotion to Top League. Mitsubishi should be fighting back, but, once again, we must beat them to return where we should be. In addition, it will be the first confrontation at home!(previous three were held at Prince Chichibu Rugby Ground, Tokyo)

Well, this is not that old story, but I hope you understand why I call them old foes. It is absolutely going to be a big game. I want all of you to show the best performance and let us shout, “Kamaishi is Back!”

Kamaishi

had a BYE this weekend.
b0032468_22131165.jpg

Other East 10 matches are....
the favorite Secom takes on Kurita,
Mitsubishi plays Meiji-Yasuda Insurance,
and Tokyo gas against the Blue Sharks.

My predictions were as follows:
Secom demolish Kurita,
Mitsubishi win Meiji-Yasuda by a big margin and
Tokyo Gas beat B/S,

and they turned out wrong.

Sesom 29, Kurita 24
It is pretty close, isn't it?

Mitsubishi 39, Meiji-Yasuda 15
Well, this is as predicted.

and the surprise is
the Sharks beat Tokyo Gas by 15-10.
The Sharks had a wooden spoon last season, and I thought that they would keep the positoin....ummm, they are fighting back.

Kurita sinks in the "Sea"

Sept. 25, 2004
East 10, round 4
@South Park, Morioka, Iwate
KSW 38, Kurita 25
It seemed that Kurita's eight were pretty mighty, but it was our pack that kept dominance.

My "Man of the match" goes to Loosehead Tetsuya Asada who scrummaged very well this afternnon.

And the moment of the game should be Fly-half Daiki Echizenya's solo try.
